It was a relief for stranded foreigners in Thailand when the order that gives them automatic visa extension to April 30 was finally signed by the Prime Minister yesterday, and hours later published in the Royal Gazette.
However, there was still confusion about whether the new law applies only to those holding a tourist visa.
To confirm, I contacted my former student who now works as an Immigration officer in Nakhon Sawan. She revealed that the amnesty applies to all visa types and not just for tourist visa holders.
But to strengthen the information, I decided to call Phitsanulok Immigration just after lunchtime today. The officer stated the same information given to me by my former student. She said that ALL visa types are included in the automatic visa extension.
Earlier today, popular Thailand-based blogger Richard Barrow posted on Facebook that some people were criticizing him on Thai Visa forums for giving wrong information about the visa amnesty.
“They said it doesn’t include people with visas like Non-B. So I doubled checked with a different source, the inspector at Samut Prakan Immigration. This is her reply.”
So, there! But if you are still in doubt, you can always ring the Immigration office near you and I’m sure they will be happy to assist you.
