The two British siblings have been reunited with Ms. Yupin, the Thai lady who helped their family during the tsunami almost 10 years ago.
Ms. Yupin Sengmuang, who runs a small restaurant and grocery along the road in Traitrang, Kathu district, said she had met Ben and Emily Willgrass after they visited her at her restaurant a few days ago.
Yupin and her ex-husband Pichet Buanim who has reportedly moved back to his home province of Phatthalung, took care of Ben and Emily, then aged 14 and 16, while their father searched for their mother. Unfortunately, her body was found lifeless in another area.
The Thai couple fed them, sheltered them and drove the family over 870km to Suvarnabhumi airport to get back home because Phuket airport was temporarily unavailable.
The siblings had the photo of the people who helped them and only knew just their first names. On the 15 of July, Ben posted on his Facebook the photo and asked help from anyone who could find them. A few hours later, the ex-couple were located and the local media then started to cover the story.
“Delightful and overwhelming,” said Yupin after meeting the siblings for the first time after a decade.
“We hugged each other, tears then flew and we cried without reason.
They greeted me and thanked me for helping them on the day of the tsunami,” she added.
Phuket governor Maitree Inthusut personally congratulated Ms. Yupin on Sunday evening for the reunuin with the British siblings.
